NEC 2016 review

This years Classic Car Show had a reported 71,000 visitors over the three days.

The car that drew the most attention was the Escort 1300GT with a 1750 half-race engine, this was one of Steve’s projects for a client, brilliantly crafted from what resembled a lace doily after the paint was stripped (photo taken at a quite time of day).

Joe and Sue came up for the day, and Joe clearly enjoyed talking to visitors about his 1930 MG M-Type, I am sure most were amused to hear that he paid just £5 for the car. What a wonderful job they have made of the 30 year restoration.

Clive’s 1934 Austin 16/6 in the background has a 16 horsepower 6-cylinder engine and is thought to be one of only three convertibles on the road from that year.

It was wonderful speaking with many Austin Healey Sprite & MG Midget owners about the different variants of condition before they started their restoration projects. I was even able to help a few visitors with some technical advice for problems they had.

Paul’s Elva was a great favourite with the children as Pudsey was driving. A number of people were unfamiliar with the name Elva.  We were able to explain a little of the background history of Elva and the great motoring heritage in Bexhill.

It was my first time exhibiting at the NEC Classic Car Show, although I had visited many times before. I had not expected to enjoy the interaction with the visitors  quite so much as I did.

Should any club members have the opportunity to show their car I would thoroughly recommend it.

Kind regards,

Phil Hart
