Bingo Run to Paradise Park, Newhaven - 22nd September

Around a dozen cars met at the De La Warr Pavilion to take part in the ‘Bingo Run’  organised by Gemma and Paul Hollebon, who were accompanied by Gary, their Shetland pony-sized St. Bernard.

A few members who had convertible cars took the roof-down gamble despite the weather forecast being described as ‘variable’ but at the time of setting off, so-far, so-good - but not for long. At various points along the 26-mile route, certain members were spotted in lay-bys or at the roadside, having regretted their al-fresco decision. Frantic closing of hoods followed, with the more lucky/smug owners having electric roofs simply slowing down and pressing a button. Only Julie and Alan decided to press on regardless - Alan's solution being to simply drive faster so the rain was deflected by the windscreen and over the car - not entirely sure that worked though . . .

Everyone arrived safely at Paradise Park which for anyone who has not visited, is comprised of a garden centre, museums, gardens, plant houses, play centre, a miniature ride-on railway for the young (and not-so-young), cafe, and the occasional dinosaur - well worth a visit.

Before we set off from Bexhill, Gemma took the last two digits of our car’s mileage reading, and did the same at our destination, and these two sets then became our playing numbers. A bingo box then came into play, and numbers were called until a member declared they had both sets. The lucky winners were Sue and Mark who were presented with a very impressive box of car-care products, kindly donated by Gemma and Paul.

After the game, most members headed to the cafe, but unfortunately dogs are not allowed at Paradise Park so our hosts with Gary, and Julie and Alan with Maggie, were unable to join us and headed home, which was a shame.

A most pleasant Sunday morning, enjoyed by all; many thanks to Gemma and Paul for arranging and sponsoring the event.
