Drive it Day
Sunday 28th was National Drive it Day. This year we had a run out to Newhaven Fort. We assembled in the De La Warr car park as usual at 09.15 for departure at 09.30. Approximately 20 members with 11 cars. We stopped on the way at Paradise Park garden centre for tea/coffee break which is on the outskirts of Newhaven. After this short break we then drove to the Fort. On entering the fort here was a video of the history of the fort over the years. Cloaked in mystery this Victorian structure and protected by its impressive ramparts, the fort has been keeping secrets safely hidden for almost 150years. Hundreds of genuine military artefacts, deep vast networks of tunnels, venture on to the ramparts, gun emplacements. The realistic air-raid recreation in the Blitz Bomb Sheller and fascinating Home Front.
Follow a discovery of trails to explore the Fort’s amazing architecture, climb the ramparts to look out over the Sussex Coast. They had a re-enactment battle with both British soldiers and German soldiers with a troop of paras thrown in for good measure. we then had the traditional quiz in the café inside the fort area. We may have to have a rerun of this event as we didn’t have time to see it all.. Thank you to DDS for organising this.
